Emma Andrews and Evelyn Sermons arrive on campus
Emma Andrews (’49) and Evelyn Sermons (’49) made history when they desegregated NJC’s residence halls in 1946, their sophomore year.

Emma Andrews, whose sister Constance Andrews graduated from NJC in 1945, was raised in Plainfield, NJ.
Evelyn Sermons
Evelyn Sermons was also a New Jersey native. She was raised in Somerville. Both were raised in working-class households and were extremely active on campus.
